A friend in need is a friend indeed

So the saying goes.
Some call him “Jack The Snake”. Con man, tukang loyar, loyar buruk, penipu and sobak. Being neutral, easy going, not busy body and quite social, I have friends who are crooks, prostitutes, smugglers, holy man, ministers, governors, businessmen, activists, Muslims fanatics and lately even a Palestinian ambassador. Even then more people seem to know him than myself.
When asked why he calls him as such, normally the character assassin would simply replay how other character assassins portray him. “It’s not personal”, he would add.
When pressed to name the victims, no names came out. When asked whether there is any court cases against him: negative answer. There is not even a nod if enquired whether Jack owes him some money.
He is Jack Of Jalan Stephen Yong. Like any Bidayuh lad from a village, he started from zero. He underwent many jobs. He tried many enterprises. He worked with many partners. He never took off.
I can vividly recall how he borrowed his wife’s relative’s old Honda cub to move around about 13 years ago.
Finally I observed that he return to basic as what the Bible teaches: he worked alongside his beloved wife. While he moved around doing what he knows best, that is prospecting and socialising, his wife would head a team of workers to execute the small contract job that he started.
Soon his connections led him into land brokerage. He is now a full time land broker. The rest is history.
My conclusion is that Jack is clean. It is just unfortunate that success create envies and more business competitors.
Last gawai, I was very happy for him, to see his new big fuly furnished self engineered, fully paid residence. Last Christmas I saw two additions to his vehicle collection, which include a Toyota SUV, making a sum of four.
My car was darned in the workshop for two weeks. My loan was not released yet, neither was my deal. I needed it before the Chinese New Year. It was inconvenient to share my wife’s car. I sms Jack in the morning. In the evening he passed me RM2000, without any question asked. I was not the first, and I believe that neither will I be the last friend in need, whom he will assist.
Leave your message at Allahway if you want to buy or sell land. Deal with a proven Dayak Bidayuh.
